Why You Need A Medical School Admissions Coach

By Nancy Bennett

Applying to study medicine is arduous. The criteria are stringent. This is attributed to the fact that these institutions have a responsibility to churn out only the best. There is actually a book that outlines the process. If one is still having trouble understanding the process, they may contact a medical school admissions coach. This person can help one through every step of the process. There is a higher chance of getting in this way especially if one has no idea how or where to start.

Apart from academic qualifications, there are personal qualities that one should have. Qualities that contribute to the general ability to be a doctor. To care for people. To do no harm. One must be absolutely committed to the work. One must be of the highest possible integrity. One should also have some volunteer work up their sleeve. This displays the ability to serve selflessly.

As it is with any other process, there will be an interview. The interviews are meant to test the capability of the student to think. Their knowledge of the field of study. One will get to express their opinions and observations on different topics. It is important to note that before beginning this whole process, one should have some exposure. The field of medicine is not meant for everyone. In fact, some say that it is a calling. One should volunteer or otherwise expose themselves to the work so they can test their own suitability for it. This exposure will come in handy during the interview.

The GPA is obviously a big determinant of whether the institution considers the possibility. There are three types of grades to consider. The first is the overall GPA. Then there is the science GPA. Then there is the MCAT score. The science GPA will display the ability of the candidate to grasp material taught in the course. The overall GPA is not a big issue but it does give insight into how well rounded an academic one is. There should therefore not be much of a deviation between the two. MCAT is like an entrance exam of sorts.

One of the main reasons for one to get a consultant to help is their inability to express themselves despite excelling at everything else. A consultant will help with the personal statement. He or she will not write it for the applicant. They will, however, guide so that it speaks as it should. So that it communicates exactly what the institution wants to hear. So that it paints an accurate picture of the applicant.

Before committing to a particular consultant or company, one must ask about their repertoire. What is the success rate? What do former clients say? What is the plan if the applications fall through? Is there a free consultation before the relationship goes any further?

Does the consultant have actual admissions experience? It is important to have someone who knows what goes on behind the scenes on the team. Or maybe someone who has been through it before. The team should be able to handle every aspect of the application process with absolute professionalism and expertise.

As mentioned, these services are not cheap. However, if compared with going at it alone. The cost of mistakes could be higher. Usually, people apply to many institutions for better chances. This is obviously going to be expensive. With a consultant, one may apply to fewer but have a higher chance of success.
