In order to win Guinness World Records, individuals have proceeded to model some extremely large wind vanes. The Tio Pepe Sherry vane found in Jerez, Spain currently holds the Guinness World Record as the biggest wind vane. The Montague City in Michigan has laid another claim on the Guinness World Record with a vane measuring 48 feet tall.

Another major contender for the world record for the largest weather vane is in Whitehorse, Yukon. The vane in Whitehorse is made of a retired Douglas DC-3 CF-CPY that is placed on top of a swiveling support. The vane is at Yukon Transportation Museum next to the Whitehorse International Airport. Pilots rely on this vane to tell the direction of wind before takeoff and landing.

The vane in Whitehorse, despite being huge, is effective. It can only rotate at a 5 knot wind speed. There are numerous tourists attracted to the vane. Furthermore, the local residents like passing near it and viewing its huge size.

It is clear from the information above that vanes can be crafted with any design and from any material. One can also make them to any size of their choice. The wind vane must be positioned, designed and anchored well for it to be able to react to weak winds. When the equipment is very huge, efficiency is very vital.
