Useful Information Regarding Chicago Asbestos

By Jessica Cox

Asbestos are mineral substances that are naturally occurring and can be pulled into a soft consistency. The mineral is made of soft and flexible fibers which are resistant to electricity, chemical corrosion, and heat. This means that the mineral is a good insulator in its natural form. This material is used in the manufacture of cloth, cement, paper and other materials by mixing it into the materials. Here are facts regarding Chicago Asbestos.

This substance has a wide scope of applications due to its ability to withstand corrosion and damage by heat and electricity coupled with making other materials stronger. It was in fact used some time back in the construction industry too. Unfortunately, the qualities making asbestos useful also make it a danger to the well-being of humans. This has led to enforcement of its ban across many countries globally.

Ironically, the United States has not banned the use of this substance. Attempts to ban it have always been received with great opposition from business interests. Thus, it remains to be legal for inclusion of asbestos in any product produced in the country. The only restriction is that the product should not contain more than one percent of the mineral.

The regulation regarding the percentage of the mineral to be included in product manufacture process only became policy a few years ago. Products and buildings made before the restriction came into force still have loads of the mineral in them. India and china are among countries still using the mineral in bulk for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

As noted earlier, this is a harmful product to human health. This product is believed to release fibers that are microscopic and are invisible to the naked eye. These fibers are hard to be detected since they cannot be smelled or tasted. When they get inhaled they settle in the body most preferably the lungs but the symptoms or effects take time to be noticed. It is therefore hard for a person to know if they have inhaled these fibers.

The fibers that are settled in the body do not dissolve so that they can be eliminated from the body system. This makes them very had to expel from the body. Over a period of several years, research has indicated that the fibers eventually start causing scarring and inflammation. They can also cause genetic damage to cells in the body.

Research has also found that diseases that are related to the inhalation of this mineral usually take a period of about 20 to 50 years for them to develop. As such, in the US, most diagnoses are as a result of exposure that occurred before restrictions regarding the use of the mineral were enforced. However, with the restrictions, cases are likely to drop significantly.

Asbestos is not a safe product and should not be inhaled or consumed at any level. This means that even the slightest exposure to this substance can result to a number of conditions. On the downside, when one gets exposed to large levels of the microscopic fibers they pose a danger to themselves. When one gets exposed small amounts of the fibers, it does not posse risk unless it is regular. Once damage is done to the cellular level, there is no known way of reversing the effects.
