The High Quality Of Giclee Replica Prints

By Stephen Harris

Many people want to fill their wall with works of fine art, but they think that it will cost them more than their mortgage in order to do it. Fortunately, they are wrong about the cost. You do not have to buy a costly original painting in order to have the quality that you would expect from an original or a museum reproduction when you buy giclee replica prints instead.

If you choose this kind of artwork, you are sure to impress guests. After all, art is not just so you feel better about your space or to add color, although those are important as well. You also want to be able to show off.

There are many cheap replicas that are mass produced and do not use the same technology as giclees. These will have no drama or dimension though, and often look flat. Buying a giclee means that you are getting higher quality at an affordable price, which is a big win for you.

The way they are made is through the use of very advanced printing technology. The makers use ink jet printers, but these are not like the ones you have at home. Most home ones have only two or up to six tanks of ink to reproduce color. These advanced printers have anywhere from 8 to 12 ink tanks to make sure the color is multidimensional and vivid. They also have incredible details that really stand out.

The original painting is digitally scanned in high resolution. That scan is then printed directly onto whatever substrate that you choose. Many times it is canvas, because that is traditionally associated with this kind of artwork. However, for a change of pace, sometimes they are made on photo paper, fine art paper, and even metal or glass.

For the artist, giclees are a huge advantage for them in a lot of ways. The scan can be kept on file, so prints can be made as they are ordered or in small batches. Before this method, many artists had to mass produce their work at great initial cost, and might lose money if all the reproductions are not sold. Using the giclee method, there is a much smaller up front cost and they can make prints far into the future, on demand. Smaller artists who have not broken though yet and have no money find this to be very advantageous.

The scans that are made of the painting can be kept on a computer as a digital image file forever. The scan can be brought back up anytime in the future for paintings, and it will look as good as it did on day one because there is no fear of deterioration at all.

Some people think reproductions have no value, but that is simply not true with giclees. In fact, the quality is so high that they can and often do fetch thousands of dollars in galleries and even at art auctions. Part of the reason is also that some artists only print a limited amount of each painting, so that each one becomes much more coveted, which ups the value and therefore the selling price significantly, so your giclee print may appreciate in value.
