Pet owners should expect their pets to face emergency situations once in a while. The situations regarded as emergencies include involvement in accidents, swallowing poisonous substances or even suffering from heat stroke, among others. Basic knowledge of canine first aid will save your friend from escalating danger and even preserve his or her life. Here are basic procedures and tips by experienced vets on how to handle such situations.

Be observant about the behavior of your dog. The idea is to collect as much information within a short time to report to your veterinary doctor. Observe whether the dog is too weak to rise, depressed, breeding, having difficult breathing and any other sign of danger. When you talk to the vet, these are the signs you will be expected to provide. Check to see the source of pain if any.

Remain at a safe distance and take precaution to protect the other people around. Animals in distress are known to be aggressive even to their handlers and owners. They will even bite you if you try to touch them. Remaining calm also sends a message to your dog that all is well. If people around panic, the animal will react aggressively and may cause more harm.

Do not take any action until you get directions from your vet. The phone numbers of your nearest vet should be close by all the time. The information you have been gathering through observation or witnessing is what you pass to the veterinary once the call goes through. In the absence of the vet, staff at the clinic will issue intervention directions to enable you manage the condition until the doctor arrives. A pen and paper should be nearby to enable you take instructions.

Check whether there is a risk of biting. This always depends on the nature of emergency. You should muzzle the dog and fasten the straps at the back of the ears. Avoid this action if your dog is displaying signs of difficulty with breathing. Small sized dogs can be restrained using a thick towel. It works as effectively as a muzzle and will restrain your pet until the vet arrives.

Do not administer human medicine to canines. This also applies to previously prescribed medicines or those whose usage is unknown. The permission to administer should only come from a vet. This is because different conditions require a different approach. Only at the direction of a vet should medicine be administered.

Movement of injured pets should be restricted as much as possible. The idea is to protect injured areas from getting worse. This disturbance causes discomfort and may worsen a fracture. A board is preferred to carry your canine because it restricts movement naturally. Rush to the clinic as fast as possible to prevent the situation from getting worse.

It helps to have a pet first aid kit near you all the time. Keep such substances as surgical tapes, bandages, thick towel and sterile absorbent gauze, among others. Scissors and Elizabethan collar will also help in case of an emergency. Through you provide emergency care, the pet must be taken to the doctor as soon as possible.
