What You Should Know About Geothermal Air Conditioning

By Michelle Harris

People are becoming increasingly aware of their contribution to environmental degradation and how this can be reversed. One way of doing so is by installing geothermal air conditioning pipes to regulate house temperature. While this form of electricity is good, it has several downsides. It is essential to be aware of several facts surrounding this power source before taking that bold step of installing it in your home.

It is doubtless that earth heat is readily available regardless of your location, but this does not make it a cheaper source of power. It is more expensive than solar or electricity with the cost ranging from $10,000 to $30,000. The high cost is contributed by the amount of drilling required and modifications for an already existing house. No wonder very few people use this technology even though it is more reliable and readily available.

There is no pain without gain because ground-based energy has several benefits, as explained here. Even though the establishment cost is quite high, operational and maintenance fees can save you up to 60% of your heating needs. Secondly, you do not have to worry about the environmental footprints you leave since this form of energy is pure. Temperature regulation unit does not also emit a lot of noise and can be fitted in any house.

There are several additional disadvantages you have to deal with apart from installation cost. First, it is not possible to cut on costs by doing the installation on your own since it is quite complicated. Even though this technology is a non-pollutant, the environment is impacted through drilling, which disrupts stability and could weaken the ground. Finding an expert is not easy since it is still a new field.

There are numerous types of systems that a user has to select from before contractors begin the connection. Each loop system is selected based on the climate, available space, cooling and heating loads, among others. The overall installation cost could go higher or lower depending on the design of the loop. Unfortunately, there is no much flexibility while choosing a plan due to the aforementioned factors.

Just as a refrigerator removes heat from within and transmits it outside, so does the pumps. To function properly, they contain a medium for heat transfer from the earth to the temperature regulation system in the house, which could be water or any other fluid. This medium is also responsible for moving excess heat from the house to the ground. Once the temperature regulation device receives the fluid, it is triggered to make relevant temperature changes.

The durability of this energy source cannot be compared with other cooling and heating systems. Since pumps are buried several fits underground, it may be unlikely for someone to interfere with them. Experts give a warranty period of 50 plus years for the pumps and 25 plus years for the house system. Additionally, once installed, the maintenance requirements are minimal.

In terms of reliability, earth powered energy is 100% dependable. Notably, regardless of the external temperatures, amount of heat underground remains constant. For this reason, you are assured of a continuous supply of power.
