By Melissa Richardson

The many institutions offering language classes that use different techniques to help the learners to understand more. ESL speaking activities are very crucial for learners who learn English as a second language. A trainer in such an institution should know her role during these sessions so that she can do things the right way. The work of the trainer is as follows.

Preparing for the session is the work of a trainer. In as much he has to involve the students so as to know their schedules, the work should not be left to them as they may not make the best decisions without his presence. Some other things to consider in the preparation include the best topic and how to conduct it. Each student may give opinions and the tutor will choose the most appropriate one.

Moderating the activity is also not easy with every student wanting to say something. Those that are not very confident will not say anything the whole time if there is no one to ask them to talk. The session may also lose the intended meaning as the learners may go out of topic and discuss other irrelevant issues. It is your duty as a trainer to control things.

Evaluation of individual students and the class as a whole is essential so that you the progress of their learning. You need to compare the set goals of the session against what you have achieved at the end of it so as to know which areas need more attention. The teacher can even set an assessment test to assist him in evaluating the class.

A lot of errors will be made by the learners and a teacher is not supposed to get angry at them for making the mistakes as it may discourage them from participating in the future. His role is to note down these errors and correct them. If possible, he can even note down the student that made a specific mistake as a way of emphasizing. This should be done in a friendly manner.

The learners will also ask questions on some of the issues they are not sure of. If they are left to answer these questions among themselves, it is possible that they will misguide each other and this will negatively affect their performance. Hence as a tutor, you must ensure that you give them a chance to ask the questions. Research on the topics you are not sure of so that you do not misguide them too.

It is the work of a teacher to motivate the students through encouragement. They may be excited about learning a new language at the beginning but they might get discouraged as things get tougher. You need to talk to them, both as a class and as individuals. Let them understand that the challenges are normal and they should not give up.

Making follow-ups is one task that most trainers tend to ignore. It is, however, important to know how your students are progressing even after they have passed the stage you were in charge of. You can help address any issues that they may have in their new class and they will appreciate so much. Knowing they are doing fine will make you a proud trainer.
