Understanding Fiber Optic Monitoring Systems

By Margaret Phillips

Production and operation organizations are the things that companies need to help the business to work smoothly. They use internal systems at every step of business operations. These analyze the performance and detect and errors within the network. To help them, they use fiber optic monitoring systems.

Infrastructure, maintenance, network security are the provisions for the system. It assesses the quality of fiber continuously using integrated tools and systems. It does performance trend analysis using metrics in the fiber optics. Its advantage is the alerts it gives to the supervising administrator when errors, threats, and system intrusions occur in real time.

Thus, this system really is needed within the company. One such need is its support on internal communications via use of optical cables. It also runs and enables higher bandwidth in internet connection so data integrity can be improved. It has extended reach within the internal system so any faults are detected easily from the source.

Do note that systems breach can also occur here despite its secure system. Issues are detected such as fiber tapping, the most common issue in this monitoring system. The system provider has yet to resolve this issue causing it to become a major problem. Though prevention has yet to be created, the company can be assured that the system can detect it when it occurs.

Aside from that, limitations are also associated with it as well. It is commonly known as dead zones or blackouts. These occur because of the saturation, air gaps, and splices in the connecting cables. This is prone to happen in monitoring systems that are based on optical time domain reflectormeter. It is due to the system not sending any alerts to the supervising administrator of the occurrence in other fiber cables during blackouts.

Another is dark fibers, or simply unused and unlit fiber cables. However, note that this can create both limitation and opportunity to the company. For instance, the redundancy of information they provide to the network can be a benefit as it will help in the disaster recovery of the company. However, once an accident happens in the infrastructure or the cables get waterlogged, the company will lose all information, including the backup.

This system also has another device which the company can use instead of OTDR. It has the same efficiency but is greatly cost effective. This is called as remote fiber monitoring. This sub system will reduce their service time significantly with the added protection in its implementation for data theft.

Some companies use this because it offers simplicity when creating the solutions for the network. It results to having a great impact to the internal system. Its features include the unique monitoring of active and dark fibers. It uses power signals to each fiber cable until a fault is detected.

The future is uncertain yet we know that it will continually progress for the better. Thus, the accurate monitoring here will get more and more comprehensive as well. Innovations are currently on the go to lessen power consumption. It will also find a way to lessen the electrical interference that affects the performance of the system.
