Affordable Fine Art And Prints Make Nice Housewarming Gifts

By Deborah Scott

Decorating a home is seen as one of two things to many people. It is either a chore or an expression of their personality. For those who are somewhere in between, knowing where to start can be a little tricky. The best rule to follow is to start with favorite colors and take it from there. Images that contain various colors and styles can get expensive but there are some affordable fine art and prints that will fit into any budget.

For those in doubt, it may help to look at the decor of their previous home. Make a mental note about any art hanging on the walls and the style. Some people like classic artist reprints like Monet, Van Gogh or even Warhol. Others would rather go with famous photographer poster reprints like Robert Mapplethorpe or Herb Ritts.

When choosing a gift for someone else, if their personal taste is uncertain, going with their interests may be a good start. A recipient that has a quirky side and spends a lot of time cooking may appreciate the Soup Can by Andy Warhol. Another person who has culinary skills but with an earthy nature may want something that is original.

While amateur art lovers may be impressed by a vast selection of works found online, they should not rush to make a purchase. Art and photographic images have great value but there are only a handful of retailers that do the originals justice. The other who offer insanely low prices usually send something that looks as if it were photocopied at an office supply store.

Another way to decorate is to use monochromatic images with a room painted in a bright color. Window treatments, furniture, and flooring may be in matching or analogous colors but using vivid black and white photographs in poster form can bring a unique look to any space. Add in a few chrome accessories and one can have a look worthy of home decor books.

Sometimes the individual personality is a good indicator of what will be appreciated. For instance, those who appreciate urban culture may like a Basquiat print for the living room or if they are into the arts, a studio space. Giving something that may prove inspirational is probably one gift this type of person will love for a lifetime.

Some of these places are a great source of photography posters. Instead of going with a painting reproduction by a known artist, some photography works are good choices. Not only are these less expensive than some reprint mounted on a canvas but anyone can insert these in a box frame for a modern look.

When it comes to art, whether it be an original or reprint, cutting too many corners can certainly backfire. Even if a person is a novice when it comes to appreciating good design, something that is poorly copied will not be displayed in any home with taste. This is often the case with sellers that offer extremely low prices. Customer reviews are normally a strong indicator of what prospective buyers can look forward to when making a purchase.
